Frank Thomas, longtime USGA gear guru, out to simplify mystery of golf club and ball technology

Two years after sailing alone to America from his native South Africa on a 25-foot boat, Frank Thomas started his golf equipment career at a sporting goods store in Middle America. Today, Thomas is golf's equipment guru, his resume including a 20-year stint as the USGA's technical director and the creation of consulting company Frankly Golf. In an exclusive interview, TravelGolf.com talks to Thomas about why so many golfers are suckers, and a few other subjects dearly related to golf equipment.

Randpark Golf Club READER REVIEW

Randpark Golf Club in Johannesburg, a South African diamond.

The Randpark course at the Randpark Golf Club in Johannesburg, South Africa is a very beautiful golf course with rolling hills, wide fairways and very player-friendly greens - fast with subtle slopes, writes Charles Richardson, a reader from Houston, Texas. I would recommend this course to anyone visiting Johannesburg. The employees are very friendly. I give it 5 points out of 5 for service and design. I plan on going back next year.

On the Spot

The great Green Golf swindle

Golf is trying to take a page from the Whole Foods playbook and convince us golfers that "earth-friendly courses" with worse conditions and higher green fees are the noble, righteous play.

FROM THE ROUGH

Tired of the same old golf tours? Try South Africa for a real golf safari

South Africa has great courses and one important attraction you won't find here in the U.S.: elephants strolling through the courses or warthogs grazing in the fairways. They aren't all that way, of course, but there is usually a game reserve within a short driving distance. Down here, you could opt for kitsch at Sun City. But if you do, don't linger there -- there's too much of the real South Africa to see.

COURSE REVIEWS

Enjoy golf, wine and spectacular views at Erinvale

Located in the winelands, with awesome mountain views, Erinvale Golf Club is a great setting for a visitor to get a feel for South African golf, preferably with two big Afrikaners, sweating and cursing their way good-naturedly around the course. From the back nine, you can see the ocean, and from almost the whole course you'll have views of the surrounding hills, the vineyards gleaming in the African sun. The golf and wine culture blend spectacularly.

For truly wild, wild golf, Skukuza in the African bush is a must play

The sign as you enter the Skukuza Golf Course is a harbinger of what you're in for: "Beware: Dangerous Animals. Enter at Your Own Risk." Located, deep in the African bush, within the confines of South Africa's Kruger National Park, this is a place where the animals have a free, lifetime pass to the course. With hippopatami, lions, leopards, elephants and rhinos in the mix, never has keeping it in the fairway been better advice.

FEATURE STORY

Prince's Grant lodge gives you Zulus, monkeys, fine golf

There can't be too many places on earth where you can put together a Zulu-monkey-golf package. The Prince's Grant Golf and Country Estate north of Durban happens to be one such place. If you like your Zulu history, monkeys, wild and strange birds and - oh yeah, if you like to play golf in exotic settings - you might want to try this small property far from the well-trod South Africa tourist path, writes Tim McDonald.
